Speak no Evil

Its been a while since you have heard from me, but not for lack of something to say. Hardly a day goes by without me thinking “I should blog about this”. This past week has been my spring break, both for the school at which I teach and the one that I attend. Last Sunday, I left for Washington DC with a fellow teacher and 13 middle school kids. We were on a whirlwind tour of all the cool sites: Iwo Jima, Mount Vernon, The Capitol, The Supreme Court, Washington/Jefferson/Roosevelt/Lincoln/Vietnam/Korea/ WWII Memorials, The White House, The Capitol, The National Archives, The Library of Congress, Arlington National Cemetery, The Holocaust Museum, Ford’s Theater and the place Lincoln died, The International Spy Museum, The Smithsonian, and we went to eat at some really great restaurants. We even got to see the Presidents helicopter land in the back yard of the White House and pick him up. If you are a history buff like me, you would have thoroughly enjoyed the trip and getting to see so much of your Nations history right before your eyes..I was definitely WOWed.

This post is about the highlight of my trip. When we were sitting on the steps of the Supreme Court, listening to the tour guide tell us all about the happenings of what goes on inside, I noticed six people standing at the base of the steps, in a single file line, off to my left. They had a thick piece of red tape across their mouths and written across the tape in in black was the word LIFE. My students asked what they were doing, and I assumed they were protesting something..then it hit me…these were pro lifers. I left our group to walk over to them and told them that I supported what they were doing and asked if I could take their picture….they nodded in approval:

Notice the guy in the middle..what’s he doing with his fingers? Making a cross??

Isn’t it also interesting that there is only one female represented in this group??

Can you see the intensity as they pray?? Awesome!

As I was taking these pics, a man came over to me and asked if I wanted to know the meaning behind this…so all my students and myself went over to the side and this guy (who was from Lubbock, TX) proceeded to explain that these people were in fact pro lifers. They knew that The Supreme Court would be meeting soon to discuss Roe vs. Wade and instead of marching in protest, they wanted to do something more peaceful and Christ-like…so they were praying that the Holy Spirit would move in the hearts of the men behind the walls and that they would see the value of human life as God sees it. One of my kids asked how long they had been there and the guy told us that for the past three years, there have been at least two or more people praying this same way, at this same location. They basically work in shifts.

What I found so moving about this is that as I sit here in my comfortable chair in my comfortable apartment in Houston, TX, there are brothers and sisters out there fighting for what we know to be right… I know my prayers and yours are just as moving from any location, but seeing them there just really was a sight to behold. I won’t forget it. God allowed Himself to be shown in a new way to my students as well and based on the questions they were asking, He is moving in their hearts. As I stated above, this moment was the highlight of my trip.
