BFF’s 4-LIFE

Relationships are a funny thing. God designed us for being with one another, but still, it seems that people come in and out of your life so quickly sometimes. The older I get, the more I see this and realize how true it really is.

Tonight, I talked with two of my very best friends. Leah and Jamie. I will be the first to admit, I really don’t do a good job in keeping in touch with people from my past… Its not that I don’t care or that I forget about them….that’s hardly the case. It’s just that I really get consumed with the here and now, and before I know it, months have passed. I do keep in touch with people through the internet, whether it be e-mail or facebook/myspace, and of course I text, but nothing compares to hearing their voices. I don’t even realize how much I miss it until we actually do get to talk.

Leah and I became friends through her husband Ted. He was a pastor on the Big Island, HI and would often come to the BSU to minister to the students. He would tell me how much she and I had in common and that we were close to the same age (we were born one day apart…how cool is that??). She plays drums (so do I) and guitar (so do I) and is a very gifted song writer (I’m not as gifted as she is, but I write too). She even has a CD out with all original songs. She loves God and is an amazing mother…we instantly hit it off, and the rest as they say, is history. She and Ted now live in California and I got to spend Thanksgiving 2006 with them, and it was a rich time. The miles and time apart didn’t even phase us and it was like we had just seen each other a couple of days ago. Leah, I can’t wait till we hang in heaven and play our instruments together with Jesus…I love you, sistah!

Now, my buddy Jamie and I met in Ft Worth the night I moved into the dorm at Southwestern. I had driven all day straight from Paducah, KY (the motherland) and was unpacking my car. I was carrying in my guitar and she was walking down the hall. I asked her if it would be OK for me to play in my dorm room or if it would be too loud…she smiled and said that it would be awesome if I played. I found out that she and I were in the same degree program, and she too was a missionary…she lived just a few doors down from me, introduced me to several girls, and again…the rest was history. We talked everyday and she made a very hearty attempt at showing me how to be a Texan (she failed but got an A for effort). We laughed about lots of stupid stuff, ate lots of BBQ, and she always made me feel like family. As a matter of fact, after being in Ft Worth just 2 weeks, my car was totaled, and I had nothing. She immediately called her dad, and he helped me shop for a new car. My parents in Ky were grateful that I had a family to be with in Texas….I spent holidays with them, and even brought Jamie to KY to see my part of the world. She is now serving Jesus in Arkansas, and its been a few years since we have seen each other…but again, when we talk, its like we never skipped a beat.

I could go on talking about the amazing relationships that God has blessed me with. To date, they literally stretch across the globe. Its awesome to be in the family of God and to be able to experience true Koinonia with His children…my brothers and sisters. My heart is pretty full right now…thanks you guys, and thanks be to God, for friends.

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
