Run for the Roses

Today is the first Saturday in May, which to a die hard Kentuckian means only one thing…the Kentucky Derby. In this case, number 134.

Currently, its about one hour away from the official start..the Run For The Roses as its so affectionately called.  A horse named Big Brown is the favorite, but with his positioning, I don’t think he will pull it off.  Not since Barbaro, have I picked a favorite anyway.  The way I pick a horse depends on several things: his bloodline,  where he was raised, who trained him, what jockey is riding him, and finally, how he looks.  This year, I am going with horse #9, Pyro to win.  I also like #10, Colonel John…we will see how they play out.

There are so many more things I wanted to write about the Derby when I sat down to write this post; like why its such a big deal, its history, why people wear big hats and drink mint juleps, and why its called the Run For The Roses…but I really want to go see the coverage leading up to it…so I will leave you with the official song…I have posted this song before, when Dan Fogelberg died, but today it seems right to do it again.   I wish I was home today. Peace.
